Opinion And Thought
- In my opinion.....
- I think.....
- What I mean is.....
- Personally I think.....
- In my experience.....
- According to me.....
- I strongly believe that.....
- As far as I am concerned.....
- From my point of view.....
- As I understand.....
- As I see it.....
- I reckon.....
- I am compelled to say.....
- By this I mean.....
- To my mind.....
- Would like to point out that.....
- In my humble opinion.....
- Of course.
- This is absolutely right.
- I agree with this opinion.
- I couldn't agree more.
- I agree with what you are saying.
- I agree, I never thought of that.
- Neither do I.
- That's a good point.
- I think so too.
- I am sorry, I don't agree with you.
- I am not sure I agree with you.
- I don't agree with you.
- I am afraid I have to disagree with you.
- I do not believe that.
- By this I mean.....
- I disagree with you.
- I think you are wrong.
- That's not the same thing at all.
- It is not justified to say so.
- I am not convinced that.....
- I can't say I agree with this, and here's why.....
If we consider a higher level, then we can speak of an “inventive thought” and a “medical opinion.” In such a case, the difference is one of quality. Both have a high level of value — the first could result in a new invention to help millions. The second might save a life — or even millions of lives. The difference is qualitative, although both have a high value at this level.
If we consider the highest level, then we speak of Philosophical Thought and Legal Opinion. In this case, the difference is profound. Philosophical Thought (e.g. Plato, Aristotle, Anselm, Descartes, Hobbes, Spinoza, Locke, Leibniz, Hume, Kant, Hegel) has the capability of changing the whole world for thousands and perhaps millions of years. A Legal Opinion, by contrast, has a temporal application at most — even if it affects an entire nation for centuries.
For Hegel, “Philosophy is not about Opinion, or the Spinning out of Opinions.” Philosophical Thought is always Systematic. In his History of Philosophy (1830) Hegel excluded any writer who neglected the method of System. (All the philosophers I named above were Systematic as well as Encyclopedic. Their Thought was Universal.)
